Laura is being strong-armed by Eddie Arkadian (Chris Murney)into playing his girlfriend's music video on the show. A chance meeting also gets him involved with Laura Charles (Vanity), the host of a music video show. After Sho'nuff trashes his father's pizza shop and Leroy still will not fight him, he is labeled a coward by his little brother Richie (Leo O'Brien). Carry III) will stop at nothing to force Leroy into accepting the challenge. Knowing that Leroy does not want to fight him, Sho'nuff (Julius J. Sho'nuff, the self proclaimed "Shogun of Harlem", is determined to destroy Leroy and prove that he is the best martial artist in New York City.

Although Leroy is nonviolent, he manages to make a few enemies on his path towards enlightenment. This makes him a social outcast, and the target of jeers from the kids in his neighborhood. Leroy is a very shy and unassuming kid that works in his father's pizza shop and focuses solely on his martial arts training. All this combined makes Raya a good, but not great, family adventure. The Last Dragon is 1985 action film centered around Leroy Green (Taimak), a karate student that is sent on a quest to find the karate master and to reach the upper level of martial arts known as the glow. I loved how by the end of the film Raya has a whole troupe of misfits. Obviously Awkwafina is a ton of fun, but ever other random side character who joins the adventure has personality as well. It is it's own unique world with it's own unique set of characters and environments, and it was a fun place to explore. Some people have drawn comparisons between this world and the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and while there are some similarities, to dismiss it outright because of that is pretty minimialistic.

What did work for me though is GORGEOUS visuals and a stunning world. That on top of its aggressively heavy-handed messaging that just didn't work for me personally keep it from being an all time classic. Not saying that as a bad thing, the formula works, but sometimes Raya can feel a bit like it's going through the motions of an adventure rather than feeling like a true adventure.
Ancient lands, swashbuckling hero, magical sidekick who speaks in pop culture references, all that stuff is here. Think of Raya kind of like a modern take on Aladdin.
